The 5 Best (and cheapest!) Resources to GROW Your Home Bakery Business

The 5 Best (and cheapest!) Resources to Grow Your Home Bakery Business

Honestly, I should have written this post AGES ago!

In this post I’ll share the BEST resources I’ve come across that have actually helped my Home Bakery to GROW. This post is ideal for you if you’ve already started your business and want to GROW it into a part-time or full-time gig.

Over the past few years I’ve been sharing these resources with bakers in emails when they ASKED for it. But it somehow never occurred to me that there are probably thousands of home bakers who have these questions too, but never ask them.

Questions like:

>> “I know my baking tastes really good, but I’m struggling to get clients consistently! How do I get more clients & sales?”

>> “I’ve had a few sales! I feel very excited, but I also feel totally overwhelmed… What am I supposed to do next to grow my business?”

>> “I’m working 24/7, but I’m barely making enough money to cover my expenses. What am I doing wrong? How do I grow my income?

This post is here to answer such questions and point you to resources that will help you to reach Home Bakery Success FASTER.

Please note: This post has affiliate links. This means that if you purchase some of these products I get a tiny commission – but at NO extra cost to you. I’m super proud to recommend these resources to you because they’ve completely transformed my Home Bakery Business!

1. Pricing Calculation System

This is probably the most important part of a baking business, but home bakers often don’t realize how serious this is.

You can have the best website in the world and be the best baker in the world – that doesn’t guarantee a successful Home Bakery.

Even if you can have the best recipes in town and have a massive client base… Even if you’re fully booked for months in advance it does NOT guarantee a successful Home Bakery!

We bakers often forget that a baking business is in fact a BUSINESS.

It’s super easy for us to get wrapped up in the BAKING part of it, but a successful Home Bakery is actually only 30% great baking and 70% great BUSINESS strategy.

That’s why large commercial bakeries with average baking are so successful. They KNOW that their BUSINESS strategy matters more than double as much as the quality of their baking!

They may score low on their baking quality, but they’ve got their business strategy down! They’re great business people and therefor their companies thrive.

I’ve told you all of this as an intro to the ONE most important business strategy tip you need.

Here’s my top tip: Businesses need MONEY to stay alive.

It’s not about being greedy at all. Just like plants need water to stay healthy and grow, businesses need money to stay healthy and grow.

If your Home Bakery doesn’t make enough money, it’s going to die. Simple as that. It’s a fact.

Yes, it’s super forward of me to say this so straight. And honestly I wish someone told me things so straight when I first started out!

The MAIN source of income you have is selling your baked goods. That’s where the money is at and it’s VITAL to your success that this part of your business functions properly!

If you undercharge for your baked goods or give all your family’s orders to them for free, you’ll need to address this as soon as possible.

Remember, your business needs money to stay healthy and grow.

If you struggle with undercharging and pricing in general you can check out this blog post >> 6 Steps for Pricing Your Baked Goods with Confidence.

You can also get my Pricing Calculator when you subscribe to my FREE Resource Library! It’s a super nifty PDF file that calculates the recommended selling price FOR you based on your ingredient costs, time spent, etc.

When you have your pricing system in place, your business will make the money it’s supposed to make.

When you price correctly you’re setting your Home Bakery up for growth and success!

2. Marketing for Beginners

Some of the best advice I can offer you is to start educating yourself on MARKETING as soon as possible!

The best products don’t get the most sales. The best MARKETING gets the most sales!

Marketing is ALL about learning how to make strangers realize that YOUR baked goods are exactly what they’ve been looking for.

Bakers tend to view business in a very outdated way. I did too at first!

They believe that there are 2 things you need to do to build a successful Home Bakery Business; bake great treats and advertise them. This strategy may have worked in the 80’s, but it’s not enough anymore!

I’m sure you’ve been experiencing this reality first hand and that’s why you’re here looking for answers.

Down that path the inevitable happens… We believe we just need to “bake great treats and advertise them” but no matter how hard we try, we just DON’T get more clients and sales.

It sucks!

And we start assuming that the reason why it’s not working is because we:

A] Aren’t “good enough” bakers or
B] Aren’t spending enough money on advertising.

This is TOTAL GARBAGE my friend. You’re a victim of totally outdated information!

First of all I want to tell you that businesses don’t struggle because their products aren’t good enough. They also don’t struggle because they don’t advertise enough. And they definitely don’t struggle because they don’t spend “enough money” on advertising.

Want to hear a shocking fact?

For 4 whole years I didn’t need to spend a single cent on advertising and my Home Bakery was fully booked every month! And it’s all because of this ONE thing – Effective Marketing.

Truth is that if you’re not getting clients you have a marketing problem. NOT an advertising problem.

Advertising and marketing isn’t the same thing.

Here’s the difference between Advertising and Marketing:

Marketing is about all the things you do to ATTRACT people to your business.

When you understand marketing and apply it effectively to your business you’re essentially turning your biz into a high-intensity MAGNET that attracts your ideal clients to you on autopilot.

Advertising on the other hand is like deep sea fishing… You go OUT and hope to find clients. It’s stressful. It’s risky. And most of all it gets expensive very fast! I’m sure you’ve felt that with your advertising efforts!

The honest truth: My Home Bakery has been fully booked 98% of the time (sometimes for 3 months in advance) with ZERO advertising.

When I started out in 2013 I DID TRY advertising and I didn’t get any business from it whatsoever! But investing my time in learning about MARKETING has made all the difference in my business.

And the great news is that marketing doesn’t need to be this super expensive mission to learn! It’s actually super cheap and effective to learn from books! That’s what I did and it works 🙂

You don’t need to go to an expensive university to understand marketing. YOU have the power to take control of your education.

I picked up my first ever marketing book I highly recommend that you start with the book just after my baking biz lost a HUGE client and hence 70% of my income – overnight!

I picked up a book (thanks to my legit husband), studied it, applied everything I learned, and a year later my Home Bakery was booked solid for 3 months in advance.

This book is a fantastic introduction to marketing in a small business and it’s called The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau. It changed everything in my Home Bakery!

Get it as soon as you can. Read a bit of it every day. Apply what you learn and I promise you – your Home Bakery Business WILL grow.

3. An Effective Website

As a home baker I totally get how daunting it seems to set up a website!

But the website building world has CHANGED drastically in the past few years. Don’t be scared off by the technological aspect of website building my friend. It’s really not a big deal at all.

Since I built my first, super embarrassing website back in 2012; some amazing, USER FRIENDLY software has been developed to help non-techies like us to build beautiful websites in no time!

But before we get to the “how?” of building a website, it’s essential that we cover the “why?”.

Why do you need a Website?

A] It’s professional:

Home Bakeries are all about approachability and connection. But when it comes to your website, it’s the one place you really need to be super professional.

According to a survey done by CNBC, a staggering 45% of small businesses don’t have a website!

And the fact of the matter is that today’s consumers LIVE online – so you need to be online to reach them.

Having a website communicates to clients that you take your Home Bakery very seriously and that you take them and their needs seriously as well.

If you don’t have a website, there will also be confusion over your availability to bake for them. If you only have, say a Facebook page, it may seem to them that your Home Bakery is just a casual thing you do for friends and family.

Having a website communicates to people that you mean business!

And lastly, to be honest, NOT having a website in this online era will ONLY damage your business’s perceived value.

The very first thing people do when they are interested in a business is to check out their website.

The last thing you want is for someone to be interested in your bakes, but then dismiss your home bakery as sub-standard because you don’t have a website.

Think of a website as your 21st century business card.

Have you ever been in a conversation where you tell people about your baking biz and then they love it so much that they ask for your business card, but then you don’t have one?

It’s such a sucky and embarrassing feeling isn’t it?!

Well, NOT having a website is the 21st Century equivalent of that!

You absolutely need a website to get business and sales to grow your business.

B] A Website Increases your Business’s credibility & reach:

As soon as your business has a website, it’s seen as a LEGIT business. It’s like having an online office/shop address.

A Website provides an opportunity for SEO (Search engine optimisation). This sounds complicated, but it’s really simple. SEO is about strategies that websites use to communicate to Google that you are a high quality bakery in your town/city/suburb.

This makes it easier for NEW potential clients to find your business on Google search which means more sales and profit for you!

Without a website, Google unfortunately and literally can’t recommend you to people searching for bakeries online.

C] A Website is an Opportunity to Exhibit What You Do:

See your website as a portfolio of what VALUE your Home Bakery has to offer.

If you fail to communicate online WHAT exactly it is that you do and how people can benefit from that, you are losing out on sales – BIG TIME.

Your home bakery essentially has a “job interview” with every single client that’s considering to order from you. And not having a website is like not even showing up for your job interview! Shocking!

D] A Website Saves You Time:

It does take some time to set up a website in the beginning, but it’s the most valuable time investment you’ll ever make.

On a website you can put ALL the details about your business and services out there for clients to see. It brings them up to speed with your business workings.

This means that you won’t spend hours answering the same questions over and over again every time someone wants to order from you.

Questions like: Do you bake for weekends? How many people does your 9 inch cake serve? Is there corn flour in your gluten free bakes? Do you deliver?

Prospective clients usually check out your website first before they will actually order from you. If they can find all the answers to their questions on your website, that means clearer communication for them and less work for you.

Even if your home bakery is just starting out as a part time venture, build a website as soon as possible. I built mine when I was just baking once a week! And it has been a backbone of success in my business.

HOW to Build a Website:

If you haven’t built a website yet, I strongly urge you to use Wix. They make it SO EASY to create a website – for free!

My very first website was on Wix, but my cousin offered to help me build me a website on WordPress because she knew WordPress very well. When I became more serious about my blog I bought a super expensive WordPress theme that has helped my blogging endeavours in particular.

But if I had to choose a platform for my HOME BAKERY’S website today, I’d absolutely choose WIX. I bought that ridiculously expensive WordPress theme because I was ignorant – to be honest.

I had no idea that Wix had become so incredible.

Squarespace is nice as well, but Wix’s free website themes & templates are better in my honest opinion and Wix is WAY more user friendly and cheaper than Squarespace.

Wix has this very nifty “Wix ADI” which is built in software that creates a whole website FOR YOU based on the information you provide! So awesome!

What’s also great about Wix is that they have a built in SEO program. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. When your SEO is good, then Google will give you a higher ranking which increases your chances of being seen when people Google bakeries in your town/city.

SEO usually takes a lot of time & effort and it’s a steep learning curve to master it. Knowing that Wix takes care of all that will preserve your sanity.

So, my friend, even if you are technologically challenged, you will be able to get the results you want without breaking a sweat.

Another wonderful perk is that lifetime technical support is included! This means they have a team of people online 24/7 to assist you if you get stuck during the website building process.

Click here to start building your website on Wix. With their amazing templates you could be DONE creating your website in like 4 hours max!

And here’s a YouTube tutorial to help you build your Wix website.

4. Build a Story Brand for Your Home Bakery Business

For the first 5 years in my Home Bakery Business I always positioned my Home Bakery to “impress people”. I thought that’s what you need to do to get people’s attention. You need to IMPRESS them.

Maybe you feel that way right now in your business?

But people don’t buy because they’re impressed.

They buy when they clearly (and quickly) see that you UNDERSTAND their problems and can help them to overcome those problems.

Here’s the most shocking truth of why businesses fail: They position themselves as the hero of the story. They make the story all about them and how amazing their company is.

But meanwhile all clients are only interested in ONE story – their OWN story!

Here’s a practical example:

We all tend to think we are Daniel LaRusso at the end of the Karate Kid movie.

On our social media and websites we parade around with our trophy trying to show people “Look! My home bakery it legit! Look at the delicious things I make! Look at the list of organic ingredients I use! Come over here and read my life story that’s all about me!”

I did this too. It’s how we all start out and there’s no shame in that because it’s what we see so many other businesses do.

But if you want your Home Bakery Business to GROW, you’re going to need to start to approach your business’ story DIFFERENTLY.

Truth is, my dear friend, we are NOT the hero of the story.

YOUR CLIENT is the hero.

Your business’ story is about guiding your client to success.

You’re Mr Miyagi!! You are the GUIDE, not the hero.

A successful business is the one guiding Daniel (your client) and helping him to overcome his problems and reach success.

When your business is all about YOU, it won’t attract new clients.

But when your business starts to revolve around your clients’ success, they start flocking to you automatically!

Believe it or not this is just ONE of the SEVEN steps that Donald Miller teaches you in his best-selling book – Building a StoryBrand.

When I started positioning my Home Bakery Business as the GUIDE and the client as the hero, things in my biz totally transformed!

Building a StoryBrand is THE BEST book on Marketing I’ve ever read. Period.

The strategies in this book are a bit more advanced though. This book will only be beneficial to you once you’ve already got a website and have worked through the book The $100 Startup already.

Building a StoryBrand has changed my life! You can also check out their podcast which is free and incredible >> Building a StoryBrand Podcast. But start at EPISODE 1! Don’t skip ahead and miss all the gold!

5. Curated Home Bakery Business Training

I’ve shared a lot of valuable resources with you in this post.

Personally I had to digest all these resources and at least 100 others – I’m talking more books, endless podcast episodes, expensive online courses and more.

I’ve already gone through this effort, so that means you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself! I’d like to invite you to my next free Home Bakery Masterclass where I’ll share my top Home Bakery Business Secrets with you.

Why I’m Scaling Down From Full-Time to Part-Time Home Baking

Why I’m Scaling Down From Full-Time to Part-Time Home Baking

Why I’m Scaling Down From Full-Time to Part-Time Home Baking

Hey baking friends 🙂

This post has been on the back-burner for quite some time. I’ve felt so unsure about sharing this important update with you, but I’ve decided to finally post it.

For 6 years I baked out my heart and soul – and my body as well as it turned out!

It’s hard to believe how much I was baking every week from Jan 2013 – Dec 2018. At one point I was baking for 7 Different Coffee shops AND all my direct clients. There was even a time when I was fully booked for up to 3 months in advance!

I’m extremely grateful for my entire Home Bakery Business journey… It’s grown me into the person I am today. Starting my Home Bakery has been one of the most incredible adventures of my life.

However, over the past 2 years things have been changing in my business. That’s what today’s post is about.

I really want to be honest with you about the reality of my baking business. I’ve been so hesitant to share these things with you because I’ve been afraid.

There’s a fear inside me that you’ll think I’m not a “legit home bakery owner” if I don’t bake full-time anymore. And that you therefor won’t be open to anything I want to teach you about the business of home baking anymore.

But despite these fears I still desire to be honest with you, because that’s what friends do.

So here goes…

Here are all the reasons why I’ve decided to scale down from full-time home baking to part-time home baking.

1. My ankle (and the rest of my body) is annnnngggrrrry

If you’ve been following me on Instagram you’ll know that my right ankle started giving major trouble in August 2019.

I was just wrapping up a day of baking and suddenly felt quite a lot of pain in my right ankle. With every step the pain escalated severely.

I knew something was VERY wrong.

Less than a minute after the pain started I couldn’t put any weight on my foot at all anymore. I couldn’t even put my foot on the floor.

I went to a physio and apparently my walking action has been wrong for the past 19 years. This made me overuse a certain tendon in my leg & ankle.

For 2 weeks I couldn’t stand or walk. I had to cancel all my clients’ orders and take a month off from baking.

Despite exercises and stretching my ankle still isn’t doing that great. I can literally only bake 1 day per week otherwise my ankle freaks out.

Now please don’t worry that something like this will happen to you if you stand and bake a lot!

You’ll be just fine!

This is just happening because my body is FAR from normal.

Long story short I had a tumour in my spinal cord and brain as a baby. The doctor surgically removed half of it. The Lord Jesus Christ made the other half disappear. The doctor even wrote “miracle” on my file.

I still can’t believe this really happened, but it did. All glory to Father God.

The tumour had grown inside me for more than a year though and in that time it caused a lot of damage to my nervous system.

My entire right side of my body is smaller and weaker than my left side. My right side also has quite a lot less functionality. This is a photo of my feet and ankles.

When I was 12 I also had to undergo surgery on my right leg to make it straight because it was completely skew. During this massive operation the doctors also operated on my foot and ankle.

So with all these operations and permanent nerve damage and scoliosis – it’s safe to say that my body is FAR from normal.

I’ve been trying to ignore this fact my entire life.

All my life I’ve tried with every ounce of will power in me to look normal. All my life I’ve been trying to PROVE to other people (and myself) that I’m normal. And in the process I’ve totally overextended myself.

I’ve been pushing my body to do MORE than it’s able to… For YEARS now.

The TRUTH is that I’m NOT normal.

And I’m starting to realize that that’s okay.

My body is different. It’s weak and limited. And it’s not a reflection on who I am as a person. My body IS just different.

So I’m deciding to finally cut my body some slack. It’s been going along with all the crazy amounts of work I’ve forced it to do.

Now it’s my turn to go along with what my body really needs.

And that’s physical rest.

Over the past few months I’ve figured out that my limit is baking 1 day per week. If I bake more than that my ankle just starts hurting again.

I’m EXTREMELY grateful that I CAN at least bake for 1 day per week. It could just as well have been the end of my Home Bakery Business, but thankfully it’s not.

2. Right now, my help is needed more elsewhere

Philosophy of Yum was originally just the name of my Home Bakery Business. I never thought I’d start a blog.

As I kept baking the same things over and over and over again for my wholesale and direct clients I began to discover some fascinating baking tips & tricks!

Baking tips like:
How to bake perfect cupcakes.
How to get a shiny crust on your brownies.
The EASIEST way in the world to temper chocolate.
How to fix split chocolate ganache.
And so many more!

I figured that this info will be helpful to other home bakers out there and a blog seemed like the best way to share this info.

Eventually people started asking me questions about my Home Bakery Business and reaching out to me for help in starting their own.

I then realized that it might be a good idea to show people how to start & grow their own Home Bakery. Online courses seemed like a great way to help home bakers right around the world!

In August 2017 took an online course to help me create my own online courses. And the feedback has been INCREDIBLE!

Like Cameron’s story:

“In the course I felt empowered to just keep moving forward and not to be afraid even if I don’t have everything figured out and don’t feel ready. Then I decided on a date and launched my business. Week 1 – I sold out! Week 2 I’ve sold out again!”

And Angie Watts’s story:

“Since I’ve started working with Aurelia, I haven’t had one week go by without an order! It’s the best investment in myself & my business I’ve made. THANK YOU! I feel more confident in myself as a baker and moving forward in my home bakery business!”

After baking full time from home for 7 years I've started making some drastic changes. I want to keep being honest with you so that you make good decisions in your Home Bakery Business. Here are the reasons why I'm scaling down to part-time Home Baking... #homebakery #homebaking #bakingbusiness #cakebusiness

>> I never thought that I’d be a teacher or coach. And never in my wildest dreams did I think my little life would help bakers around the world to believe in themselves and start their own businesses.

What’s happened in the process is that the more students enroll, the more time I need to invest in supporting them. My students have become my top priority. Their success is my priority. Once they’re part of my programs, they have my support 100%.

There aren’t many people online who help home bakers to build successful businesses. There’s help for cake decorators yes, but for humble home bakers like you and me – not so much.

Look, I know that cake decorators have taken over the baking scene. There’s a time and place for cake decorating, but you and I both know that tasteless decorations can’t comfort people and connect families like DELICIOUS home baking can.

So it’s my mission to help flavour-obsessed home bakers to get the confidence and business skills they need so they don’t feel intimidated to share their irreplaceable gift of comforting home baking with people who need it.

These amazing home bakers deserve to get the help they need. Their community, the world, NEEDS their delicious home baking. And if I can show bakers how to reach those people, it would be wrong to just keep my head down and do nothing to help them.

Baking is still super important to me.

But helping other flavour-obsessed bakers to reach more people with their baking is now MORE important to me in this season of my life.

May I just say that I’m extremely grateful to the Father for TIMING everything so… so… perfectly (which seems like a total understatement).

He knew all along that my body would get to a point where it can no longer bake full-time.

He knew.

And He started carving out a new way for me 2 whole years before it happened… I’m just beyond humbled by His faithfulness.

If I’m totally honest I still would’ve preferred to have a stronger, normal body that could bake all day long. That would’ve been AWESOME.

That would’ve been a lot simpler.

I wouldn’t have needed to learn so many new things about blogging, online business, creating courses, optimizing my SEO (aka getting found on Google) and so many other complicated things.

I could’ve stayed in my comfort zone – my tiny kitchen – keeping to myself and never needing to put myself out there.

BUT…

I also wouldn’t have met YOU.

Or any of the other gold-hearted home bakers I’m blessed enough to support in their journey to confidence and success.

God’s way is BETTER.

It’s not easier.

And it’s not un-complicated.

It requires us to stop hiding and step into who He has MADE us to be.

It requires us to open up to letting mountains go and open up to His healing, Lordship and restoration.

His ways are higher than our ways.

And I’ve come to see that the more I look to Him and His ways, the more I become exactly who I REALLY am.

I hope this post encourages you to also open up to who God has REALLY made YOU to be. That you’ll stop fighting Him.

That you’ll stop running away.

That you’ll join me in surrendering to our glorious Father. And surrender to who He has made you to be; therein lies so much freedom.

We were made for Him.

And a kinder, more loving or patient being than Him has never existed.

Join me in continually hearing from Him who we REALLY are and not what the world tells us we’re “supposed to be”.

Lots of love

Aurelia

How Starting a Home Bakery has Changed My Life

How Starting a Home Bakery has Changed My Life

How Starting a Home Bakery Has Changed My Life

Hey there Home Baker!

I usually share posts about Baking Tips, Home Bakery Business Tips or Refined Recipes. But today I want to break from my usual format and share a side of my story with you that I rarely ever talk about…

I want to give you a closer look inside my life as a full time home baker and more importantly I want to share with you how my Home Bakery has CHANGED my life.

Because my Home Bakery Business HAS changed my life – in ways I NEVER thought possible.

There’s so much to say, but I think the best way to go about it is to share the top 11 ways my Home Bakery has changed my life.

So get your cup of coffee, laughing abs and tissues ready!

1. My Home Bakery has Given me the Opportunity to Work at Home

Pencil skirts, heels and hair do’s have never been my thing at all. The whole corporate scene in fact just wasn’t a good fit for me… I used to feel “weak and pathetic” for not coping in that stressful environment, but thankfully I see it differently now!

The corporate system is what it is – but I have been made to be ME. It’s like a square peg in a round hole. They just don’t fit and that’s okay 🙂 It doesn’t make either of them “better” or “weaker” but just DIFFERENT.

Some people (like my husband *cough-cough!*) love going on road trips, all kinds of adventures and outings to just “get out”, but honestly I just don’t get that! Lol!

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE being at home!! Always have. Even as a kid I always wanted to stay at home. Sure, I was very insecure, but that’s not why I loved being at home. I love home now for the same reason I did back then.

Home is cozy, friendly, accepting and fun.

I can wear WHATEVER I want! A bad hair day has ZERO relevance. I can have dance parties while I’m baking and sing along to the endless string of musicals I watch on max volume. And NO, after 6 years I’m still not over it!

Along with this comes all the other perks of working at home like never sitting in traffic – like ever! Going for walks outside when I want. Having pets and a garden around (corporate doesn’t offer that benefit). Having peace and quiet. Knowing my bed is only 10 feet away at all times.

These are the kind of things that really boost life’s AWESOME factor for me!

2. I Can Decide How & When I Spend My Time

Want to know something REALLY cool? I pretty much never wake up with an alarm clock. Baking is a very physical profession, so I decided to grant my body all the rest it needs to recover from the day’s work.

I sleep till about 07h30, spend time with the Lord, eat breakfast on our couch in the sunshine, shower and only start working at about 09h30.

I realize that things are a bit more complex when you have kids. But I fully believe and have seen that God grants parents the physical strength they need to get through a day when they haven’t had enough sleep.

But the bottom line is that when you have a Home Bakery, you can decide what’s more important to you and structure your work day according to that.

RELATED: How to Plan Your Home Bakery’s Weekly Work Schedule

When I have our car I can go shopping when the grocery stores are totally empty. Yes I totally do dance moves when a good song is playing!

How starting a home bakery has changed my life

If I have something urgent happening on any given day, I can just clear my schedule – simple as that.

When a friend or family member needs me, I can plan my work day around that.

I can work and stop working when I choose to.

I don’t take this for granted. It’s such a huge blessing to live this way and I wouldn’t ever want to change it!

3. Baking has Helped Me to Understand My Value

This is a more intense one. Have that tissue box close by my friend!

So, my life has not been easy – I mean, whose really has?

But here’s the true story.

I had a tumour (Astrocytoma) in my spinal cord and brain as a baby. It started developing when I was about 2 weeks old, but they only discovered it when I was 1 year old.

MRI scan technology wasn’t available yet in my parents’ small town. I kept on screaming my head off every day and my mom knew something was very wrong with me, but nothing showed up on the X-rays. The MRI when I was 1 year old revealed everything that was going on…

The doctors said that if they operate I’d be paralyzed, but if they don’t operate I’ll die because the tumour was growing rapidly and was already at the breathing centre of my brain.

Everyone my parents knew started praying. The church started a 24 hour prayer chain. My dad came into my room every day and rebuked the growth in the name of Jesus Christ and spoke life and healing into my body in the name of Jesus Christ.

The doctors could finally operate when I was 15 months old because until then I was just too small to operate on.

After a gruelling 8 hour operation, the Neuro Surgeon reported that they could only remove about half of the tumour and by some miracle I wasn’t paralyzed yet.

They recommended radiation, but my parents just didn’t have peace about putting such a small baby through that.

Everyone kept on praying.

My mom said that after the operation I was finally calm and she could see that having so much of the tumour removed definitely increased my comfort.

I made it past the one month mark, then 2 months, 3 months…

At the age of 2 (on my birthday) I started walking for the very first time, down the aisle at church while everyone celebrated and cheered at the Lord’s faithfulness…

I went back for check-ups with the Neuro Surgeon, but somehow the remaining half of the tumour had vanished completely. The Doctor wrote “MIRACLE” on my file.

If you look up case studies on Astrocytomas, the mortality rates are practically 100%. Because they usually grow back. After going for check-ups for nine years, the Doctor told us with a chuckle that he thinks we can stop coming!

So yes, that’s what Jesus Christ has done. He is alive. He is beyond powerful. He is 100% REAL and He loves us like no one has ever loved.

Where it gets tricky is that a lot of permanent nerve damage was done to the entire right side of my body. My whole right side is smaller and weaker. My shoes differ 2 sizes, I have scoliosis, limited function on the entire right side of my body and had a skew right leg (which doctors operated on when I was 12).

Unfortunately kids aren’t very tactful – especially when you look different.

So I was excluded, rejected, bullied, tripped, and ridiculed in public throughout my school years…

This made me believe that I am worthless, faulty, not good enough, unworthy, embarrassing to people and that I have no real value to offer anyone.

But baking was a haven. It’s something that I can do WELL. And somehow, cakes I made with my own two hands made people HAPPY… What a gift to bring HAPPINESS to someone’s life?!

It took a while, but seeing that I bring joy, comfort and inspiration to people’s lives through baking made me SEE that I have so much to share with the world and that I am incredibly valuable…

All that stuff that happened with those other kids was a total lie.

4. My Business has Helped to Heal My Confidence

A very interesting thing happens whenever you start any business; whatever is going on inside you WILL come out.

Over my last 6 years of full-time baking it’s become crystal clear that our baking talents or resources are not the key factors that determine our business’s success at all!

We keep thinking the reasons our Home Bakery is struggling are our recipes, abilities and lack of resources, but they are not to blame.

It’s not really everything outside you that’s holding your business back, but everything that’s going on INSIDE YOU.

Michael Gerber wrote this incredible book from his own experiences of working with struggling small businesses (The E-Myth Revisited). At one point he says:

“Your business is nothing more than a distinct reflection of who you are. So if your business is to change – as it must to continually thrive – you must change first. If you are unwilling to change, your business will never be able to give you what you want.”

The moment you decided to start a Home Bakery was the moment you agreed to a never-ending journey of personal growth and transformation.

There’s no escaping it and trust me, you’ll learn to love it!

YOU are the center of your business. Not your baking, but YOU as a person.

YOUR inner constitution directly shapes your business every single day. Your thoughts influence your feelings, your feelings influence your actions and your actions determine your results.

So when my business was struggling at first, it FORCED me to start opening up my issues. I had to! There was no way around it! So I gradually started releasing and repenting (because I’m a Christian) from my false beliefs that I embraced as “truth” for most of my life.

Actual TRUTH started replacing those lies and guess what? A confident, secure Aurelia started emerging on the other side 😀 How extraordinary, right?!

The Lord works in mysterious ways!

5. My Home Bakery has Helped Me to Mature

Now because of my difficult childhood, I subconsciously expected (even demanded) that the rest of my life should be smooth sailing.

Out of the thousands of kids in all the schools in my hometown, I was the only one that had to put up with such physical and emotional struggles.

I remember always feeling like I’m not disabled enough to get all the benefits and I’m also not normal enough to be accepted.

It was TOTALLY unfair.

And after my sister died… Man… That was just ridiculous.

The world owed me – BIG time. I was the victim and at a massive disadvantage.

I blamed God and the world for EVERYTHING. And when my business wasn’t doing well it was also obviously God’s fault.

It also seemed like everyone around me that had rich parents that pulled out their credit card whenever their kids want to start a business, or travel places or study anything.

Why can’t my life just be “easy” like everyone else’s? Why doesn’t God send me more clients? Why does everything have to be this constant struggle? I work super hard; can’t God just let it go WELL for me just once?

Oh boy I was so deeply snuggled in my twisted victim blanket…

Through the Lord’s mercy He never answered those questions directly. He patiently and faithfully SHOWED me, over time, what was really going on.

I blamed God for not sending me more clients and not “blessing” my business, when in fact He was not to blame.

Truth is, it was MY FAULT.

I’d been ignorant and didn’t educate myself in business, marketing and sales. A successful business doesn’t fall out of the sky for ANYONE.

Starting my business was one thing, but GROWING it forced me to start taking RESPONSIBILITY for my situation.

We all are dealt a hand of cards.

Are we going to spend our entire lives grumbling about our hand OR are we going to say: “Hmm, interesting. Let me humble myself and ask God what I should do next. Let’s be teachable and read a book on cards and interview and learn from some experts to see what a good move will be.”

I’ve had to GROW UP and MATURE in order for my business (and relationships) to grow and mature.

And for this I’m DEEPLY GRATEFUL. Maturing has meant throwing away and repenting from my victim blanket.

And you know what – I don’t miss that blanket AT ALL. In reality it just WEIGHED ME DOWN my whole life.

Maturing has brought freedom and joy.

6. My Home Bakery Eliminated the Need for Anxiety Meds

Back in 2012 I worked as an Architectural technologist for about 7 months and it was one of the most challenging times of my life. The work itself was totally fine, but the office environment was absolutely horrid.

You see, the Architecture industry is intense in its very nature. It’s kind of a given when millions are at stake. But this pressure unfortunately brings out the worst in people and my boss was no exception.

She was in a difficult position with starting her own company and securing great projects to sustain her new business.

The pressure she carried on her shoulders hung like a thick cloud in the office on a daily basis. Whenever something didn’t work out the way she wanted, she shouted; at herself, the printer, the phone – whatever wasn’t cooperating.

Fortunately she never shouted at ME, but every day I was petrified that she would. This is what caused my anxiety to rage out of control, keeping me lying awake every night, completely unable to sleep – for up to 3 nights in a row. And so I had to go on medication to help me cope.

I remember it so vividly; crying while swallowing my anti-depressants, thinking… I’m only 24. Is this going to be my whole future?? I used to be happy and enjoy life. How did I get here?”

I was completely stuck. And I didn’t feel like I could go on like this for another 40 years. I was only at the 6 month mark now!

Looking back I realize it was my boss’s first experience having an employee so she didn’t necessarily know how to interact with me or how to be a good boss.

She was incredibly hard on herself and that completely dominated the office environment every day.

My negative first job experience as an Architectural technologist is not necessarily the rule for every architecture firm, but come on, it’s not exactly a low-stress job or industry. PLUS, I’m a softie! And that’s not “weak” or “bad”, but just different.

I basically had to choose:

High pressure job with secure income and meds, or low pressure job with more risk and without meds.

I chose the latter.

And it’s BAFFLING to me how the first option has become “normal”?

I decided to take the road less traveled – with less prestige and less security, BUT also with less (in fact NO) meds.

I had baked after hours to keep me sane while I was working in Architecture and like you, perhaps, I dreamed of baking at home…

Baking at my own pace, surrounded with beautiful aromas and the calm of home.

But I had NO training or any idea how to start a business or if anyone would even PAY for my goods!
But I gave it my all, educated myself through books and constant practice and my Home Bakery steadily grew into a full time Home Bakery Business (YES, I’m still baking).

And also a Home Bakery Blog so that I can support you in your Home Bakery goals!

I’m BEYOND GRATEFUL that I took this road.

And in the process I learned that WE HAVE THE CHOICE to remove ourselves from abusive situations… Be it work or relationships. We always have a choice – if we are open to it.

7. My Business has Connected me With Others in Unexpected Ways

Wow. This is a big one…

Most of my life I’ve felt misunderstood – it happens to so many creatives.

I didn’t (and couldn’t) follow the traditional path of studying and working my way up in a prestigious job.

So many family members and friends were really awkward about me baking from home. They thought I was “capable of so much more”.

My husband, late sister and cousins were always SUPER SUPPORTIVE!! And they mean the world to me.

And although they were always supportive and eager to help at Markets, Events, etc. – I wasn’t able to share my PASSION for home baking with anyone.

That is, until I finally started an Instagram account…

I never realized HOW MANY dear, amazing home bakers there are right around the world!

Connecting with all of you on Instagram has literally changed my life and I’m so grateful to now have friends who’s hearts are also made of butter.

And honestly – I never feel lonely or misunderstood anymore. And it’s all thanks to all my baking friends on Instagram! Love you guys!

8. Baking Lets Me Express My Creativity

Back when I was working as an Architectural Technologist, the only day I got excited was Thursdays because Thursdays it was “Cupcake Night”! I baked after work, late into the night and LOVED every second of it!!

MANY of my University friends that have remained in Architecture often express how the REALITY of working as an Architect is so much different than the IDEA we were presented with while we were studying.

In our studies we could go crazy with our creativity! But in the REAL world, it isn’t like that at all. Your creativity hardly ever gets expressed – especially when you’re starting out.

What’s also been awesome in this journey is that you get to be creative in MANY different areas, not just in your baking. This includes graphic design, website design and food photography!

All of them are so fun and definitely satisfy my need to be creative in my work.

I’m just SO THANKFUL that I have been in a work setup where I get to be as creative as I want to be. My Home Bakery Business is a platform for my creativity – what a blessing and JOY!

9. My Work Environment Smells INSANELY Amazing

There are so many creative careers out there, BUT there are very few that smell like Butter, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Berries, Caramel… Wow, let me stop and wipe the drool off my keyboard!

Geez we are SO LUCKY to do work that smells so incredible!! Smells are therapeutic man. Working in such an environment every day does something to your happiness.

I’m quite convinced that my bones smell like cinnamon rolls by now. And that’s why I have little dance parties while I bake J

10. My Skills & Experience have Grown Like CRAZY!

I was under the impression that I would just BAKE in my Baking Business and therefore only grow my BAKING skills. Wow – I was so naïve!

You see, what most bakers don’t realize about Starting a Home Bakery is that they are willingly stepping into the BUSINESS WORLD. We’re not just bakers anymore! When we don’t learn how to become GREAT businesswomen/men, we stunt the growth of our Home Bakeries.

So I have learned WAAAAYYYYYY MORE skills than I bargained for (once I stopped being stubborn and whiny and finally became TEACHABLE) – and I’m so grateful!!

I’ve learned all the following skills since I started my Home Bakery:

Marketing

Sales

Food Photography

Social Media Strategy

Brand Strategy

Website Design

Copywriting

Graphic Design

Management

Business Mindsets

People Skills

And of course my Basking Skills have also grown massively!

RELATED: 4 MYTHS That are Delaying You from Starting a Home Bakery Business

When we don’t have money to employ pro’s to do all these things FOR us in our business, we inevitably need to LEARN how to do it ourselves! And I honestly see that as an INCREDIBLE opportunity!

Other businesses (outside the world of baking) started approaching me a while back to help with their Brand Strategy, Website Design and Marketing – SO RAD!

So yes, starting ANY Business is an opportunity to dive in and become excellent at a whole range of new and INCREDIBLY VALUABLE skills. I got way more than I bargained for and my skillset has grown way beyond anything I ever imagined was possible.

11. Starting My Business has Helped Me to Discover Who I REALLY am

I guess this one ties in a lot with point number 4 (My Baking Business has helped to heal my confidence).

When you start any business, whatever is going on inside you WILL come out.

So just as much as it is an uncomfortable process of growth, it’s also incredible to see all the AMAZING things that were was hiding inside you – often your entire life!

I’ve discovered that I can be confident in my baking abilities for what they really ARE – a talent from God that truly makes a difference in people’s lives and brings them joy.

In the process of embracing this talent, my desires to please people (instead of expressing my creativity) started to fall off me.

Slowly, but surely my own style started to emerge. Who knew I had a style?!? I still find it hilarious, but also awesome!

I discovered that I do actually have a voice… And that’s it’s a valuable and interesting voice. Yours is too. I’m 100% convinced of it.

Through being exposed to (and learning) so many different skills in growing my Baking Business, I’ve discovered many other hidden talents I never knew I had! And they are also part of me.

We all have so many hidden talents – many of which might never see the light of day – but starting a business has done the inevitable…

It has crushed me (in a GREAT way) and refined me so that everything that was false and oppressive could fall off me.

This gradually uncovered the TRUE Aurelia and I just feel so free, humbled, grateful and excited!

Starting a Home Bakery has Changed My Life.

Forever.

If I had to do it all over again, I would.

Lamentations 3:23 -24: “Because of the LORD’s loving devotion we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”

And that concludes my story 🙂 Feels good to have finally written it down!

How to Overcome the Fear of Failure in your Home Bakery Business

How to Overcome the Fear of Failure in your Home Bakery Business

How to Overcome the Fear of Failure in your Home Bakery

Overcoming the Fear of Failure is one of the issues most of my readers & students have asked me to write about.

A number of unhealthy mindsets have plagued my Home Bakery, but anxiety and fear have challenged me most of my life, so believe me you are not alone.

SO many friends have told me: “Don’t worry about it! What’s the worst that can happen?

I know they mean well, but that question does not bring a baker comfort! In fact, when they ask me this I have a super detailed scenario in my mind of the “worst that can happen”:

What if I invest all this time and love and resources in my baking business and then no one likes my stuff?? And instead of talking to me about it, they end up writing a horrible Facebook review on my page and then no one orders from me again!

OR what if I bake this cake and it slides apart or breaks apart on the way to the wedding venue?? Then the bride has no wedding cake, freaks out and everyone at the wedding stares at me and says in unison: “It’s all your fault.”

That is the worst that can happen.

What I’m trying to say is that I honestly know how you feel.

I’ve had countless sleepless nights. The nights before food markets, before massive orders, food expo’s, weddings, birthday parties… Sleepless nights over frosting not setting in time, things over-baking, cupcakes shrinking, cakes falling, cakes cracking and more…

Another popular favourite in my early days of Baking was that my clients would lose interest over time and I would need to return to my desk job…

And then the biggest fear is that a client won’t be happy with what I baked for them.

I know how you feel.

BUT I also know now that I DO NOT have to live my life like this… AND NEITHER DO YOU.

I’ve learned how to understand fear & anxiety works, how to manage them and how to overcome them.

Please note that these are my personal experiences on what has worked for me. These tips might not necessarily work for you or appeal to you. But I’m 99% confident that they will bring SIGNIFICANT relief to the quality of your baking life and release a lot of chains from your Home Bakery.

I’m convinced that it’s nearly impossible to build up a sustainable, successful baking business without dealing with your fear & anxiety issues.

Your future success is on the table here, so I encourage you to be open while reading this post.

I would love to see you live a healthy, happy, peaceful and successful baking life.

I’ll start by explaining the most obvious causes of Fear & Anxiety and how to overcome them.

1. Uncertainty Breeds Fear

Have you ever watched The Great British Bake Off?

All the contestants are home bakers just like you and me. And gosh that tent is LADEN with fear!!

Place 12 insecure, unqualified home bakers with limited experience in a foreign environment with 2 famously perfectionistic judges… All broadcast on TV for the world to see!!

It’s so hectic when you think about it… And that’s precisely why I would never do it.

The whole set-up is built to encourage uncertainty. Uncertainty elevates emotions like excitement and fear which makes great television, because your mind will constantly come up with different scenarios of how this might all pan out.

I’m sure you’ve seen some of the bakers make obvious mistakes that could easily have been prevented if they had just researched the bake’s techniques a bit more.

If they understood the required techniques they would have an exact strategy they could DEPEND on! But very often they don’t and now you see them in an utter PANIC, just “HOPING for the best.”

HOPE is a wonderful thing, but not in baking and absolutely not in business either.

If a doctor based his decisions and courses of action on hope instead of scientific research, he would run out of business really soon and possibly lose a lot of lives in the process.

I know this is an extreme example, but I’m using it intentionally to get my point across.

“Hoping” that a bake will turn out great WILL result in heaps of fear because you have nothing to depend on – no science, no study, no research, no proof. You are swimming in uncertainty.

And this is amplified even further in a Baking Business!

Just baking amazing cakes and hoping or assuming people will come running for them is nothing more than “hoping for the best”.

“Hoping” does not guarantee a successful bake, and it absolutely does not guarantee a successful Home Bakery.

My heart breaks when I see the contestants on GBBO mess up their bakes and then say: “I’m just not good enough. Things are not working out for me today.” Kind of like the world is against them and the other bakers are just lucky.

But the truth is that their failed bake has NOTHING to do with their luck or talent.

They should have done their homework!! They should have RESEARCHED their bake into the last detail so that they can UNDERSTAND the science of it and develop a STRATEGY to use on the day.

Their insecurities, talent, lack of qualifications, lack of resources and “luck” are NOT the reason they are failing. It’s because they didn’t do enough research or develop a strategy.

Not having a strategy leads to “hoping for the best” which leads to total uncertainty and results in total fear of failure.

And very often actual failure as well to be honest.

By resorting to “hoping for the best”, you are giving your brain no strategy to rely on. This gives it no other option but to imagine a list of scary outcomes so that you can be prepared for the worst and not be shocked to death by it.

It’s your mind’s way of protecting you.

But if you do your homework, research baking AND business, learn from experts and adopt their strategies; then you are GIVING YOUR BRAIN A COURSE OF ACTION IT CAN FOCUS & RELY on.

It will no longer need to prepare you for the worst and turn on your fear alarms.

Please remember this line: STRATEGY CULTIVATES CERTAINTY.

If you feel that your current approach in your Home Bakery is “hoping for the best”, I invite you to check out the FREE Resource Library with helpful tips, tools and even a Home Bakery Business Plan Workbook. These resources will help you to start developing a clear strategy for your Home Bakery 😀

When there is certainty, fear is not needed for your survival, so your brain won’t call on Mr Fear to protect you.

home baking business | fear of failure | home bakery tips | overcome fear of failure in home bakery

2. Failure is just an Event, not an Identity

MOST home bakers are SEVERELY CRITICAL of themselves and their baking. And I am NO exception to that!!

I once received an email from one of my students about her fear of failure. The most heart-breaking line in her email was this: “It’s embarrassingly awkward to enter my online shop… I feel like I’ve failed, really. I have to do something about it or give up.

I honestly have felt the exact same way in the past… Have you? The key to stepping out of that miserable overwhelm of fear of failure is a total change in perspective. And here is the perspective:

LEARNING does not equal FAILING.

They are NOT the same thing. Do not mistake learning for failing!!

I bet if you look back to where you started out you will see how much you have grown and how much you have learned. Learning what does not work is just as important as what does work.

As a business owner you will need to learn to have grace for yourself – you are a wonderful, hardworking student of baking. Be kind to yourself.

A business is not successful because the owner never made any mistakes or never failed.

A business is successful because the owner knew how to learn everything he could from his mistakes and failures.

Mistakes and failure are inevitable on this journey 🙂

“There is actually no such thing as failure. You either get the result you wanted or the lesson you needed.” – James Wedmore

There’s no need to fear failure, there’s only a need to LEARN FROM IT.

REMEMBER: FAILURE IS AN EVENT, NOT AN IDENTITY.

3. Perfect Love Drives Out Fear

This is a famous Bible passage that most Christians are very familiar with.

There was a time that this verse actually caused anxiety for me instead of removing it! And it’s because the verse right after it says: “The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

So my immediate reaction was “Oh no! I’m not made perfect in God’s love! What’s wrong with me?! I’m failing Him!”

But now that God has restored so much in my life – especially over the last 3 years – I have a much better understanding of this passage.

No matter who you are, who your parents are, what race you are, your financial situation, your talents and opportunities… NONE of it will save any of us from the fallen nature of humanity.

ALL of us experience pain in our lives and it is unavoidable.

And what happens when we experience pain?

Right in the heart of that pain, our being questions God’s heart and intentions. His character is questioned.

And then the enemy comes and plants a lie about our heavenly Father right in the centre of that pain.

That seed, that lie, grows into a strong tree and bears awful fruit that we will eat throughout our lives. The people close to us will also have to eat that fruit. Your relationships will absolutely be affected and even shaped by that fruit.

This awful fruit includes FEAR & ANXIETY.

home baking business | fear of failure | home bakery tips | overcome fear of failure in home bakery

Your work life will eat that fruit too. Your relationships, business and entire life will end up being shaped by that tree – by that lie.

And there’s usually a whole lot more than just one lie.

And Father God is devoted to exposing those lies buried deep in your heart. But in order to get to them you will need to revisit and process that pain you’ve experienced at various points in your life.

This is extremely difficult and tearful, BUT right after the forgiveness and “letting go” happens, there’s LIBERTY like you’ve never known at the other end.

And most importantly, Father God will replace that LIE with His TRUTH.

This process is what “made perfect in love” LOOKS like.

And the main reason I’ve just explained this process is because one of the awful fruits that grow on “Lie Trees” is FEAR.

Because the lie has created UNCERTAINTY for us about the most basic strategy every human NEEDS more than air – My Dad has got me no matter what (aka Love).

God’s perfect love is a living, dynamic strategy that annihilates uncertainty.

You will now not just “know” that He loves you as an abstract thought…

You will believe with every fibre of your being that He is 100% devoted to your wellbeing and 100% trustworthy.

You know Him and His very nature INTIMATELY and you know you can build your life on that unshakable solidity.

Whenever finances are tight, or a relationship is struggling or you don’t know what to do in your business, you won’t experience fear anymore. Because you know that you can ask your loving Father God to show you where you should walk and that He’ll be thrilled to answer you!

4. Release the Expectation to be a Baking Prodigy

I can bake wedding cakes, but I hate making them because they consume me with fear.

So I don’t bake them anymore. Simple as that.

A successful Home Bakery is not built by trying to bake for EVERYONE. You don’t have to do this to yourself. Read my previous post’s section on Defining Your Niche!

If you’ve researched and practiced a specific bake but it still causes you anxiety, then do yourself a favour and remove it from your menu!

Certain bakes are just better suited with certain types of personalities.

Your reasons can even go beyond that. For example, I also don’t like baking wedding cakes because I find it too challenging to work with stressed brides.

Weddings are also typically on remote venues outside of town and that makes delivery an issue… Especially if there are dirt roads involved! I’ve once seen a wedding cake crack right in front of me due to all the shaking in the car. It was CRAZY scary!!

Do you have the desire to start a Home Bakery, but you feel overwhelmed and afraid that you might fail? Here are 4 incredible, insightful tips for home bakers to overcome the fear of failure and take that step to start their home bakery business. #homebakery #fearoffailure #cakebusiness #bakingbusiness #cakedecorator

All of these reasons combined just made me realize there’s way too much uncertainty, fear and frustration in the Wedding Cake scene, so I removed that service from my Home Bakery.

I’ve never looked back!

So look through your menu and list of services you offer. If they cause fear and anxiety in your life (even after you’ve researched effective strategies) then remove those items.

Your Home Bakery will be a lot more sustainable and successful once you remove them because all that fear will not be draining you every second of the day and night anymore!

Making bakes you are comfortable with and ENJOY baking will increase CERTAINTY in your home bakery. A niche enables you to produce higher quality bakes and eliminate buckets of anxiety in your baking life.

Home Bakery Time Management – 6 Tips to Get Your Baking Done Faster

Home Bakery Time Management – 6 Tips to Get Your Baking Done Faster

The BEST ways to get more things done in your Home Bakery is not a bigger oven or a better mixer (although those tools can increase your productivity).

I’m talking about tips that go way beyond any piece of equipment.

Resourcefulness can accomplish a whole lot more than resources my friend.

This post is also definitely not about just “working harder”! That’s not productivity, but actually just “slaving away”, so we’re not going there!

Today’s tips are more about practical advice on mindsets, planning and time management. If you manage your thoughts and time effectively, I promise you that your productivity will increase in ways you never expected it to.

So here are my 6 tips for getting your baking done faster and managing your time well in your Home Bakery Business.

And read till the end to get a BONUS TIP!

1. Start the day in “Creating Mode”, not in “Comparison Mode”

This is a tip I recently learned from Angie Lee on The Influencer podcast by Julie Solomon.

Every morning you wake up; your mindset and thought patterns seriously determine the rest of your day.

Those thought patterns will literally call the shots on your work speed, accuracy and efficiency.

Going on Instagram first thing in the morning to look at the feed of your heroes and idols is one sure way to put a rain-cloud on your productivity for the day.

Here’s what happens when you look at all that spectacular feed, deeply inhaling the coveting fumes and singing “I wanna be like you-ou-ou!”…

Your mind is forming a sub-conscious conclusion that you are not good enough and that you’ll probably never be enough and you should actually be more like “them” and less like you. Comparison drains life out of you and clouds your mind. And a clouded mind KILLS productivity.

Comparison thoughts that have the power to torment you the rest of the day. And this all happens when you’ve opened yourself up to all of that comparison and negative thoughts.

All of those thoughts are RUBBBBBBISSHHHHHHHH.

baking tips, baking business, home bakery

So instead of going on Instagram first thing in the morning and providing fertile soil and a greenhouse for those thought patterns, just don’t even open that box my friend!

Wake up in CREATING mode instead! This means that you wake up with the intention to CREATE beautiful, delicious things today.

Your goal is to make something, to add something to the world by brightening up someone’s day with a yummy treat made just for them! Engage your thoughts in that glorious mission and your baking day will be so much more productive!

2. Master your Evening Routine

A productive baking day starts the NIGHT BEFORE. If you feel lethargic and meh on your work day, you may need to get honest with yourself about your evening routine.

Yep, I’m talking to you Netflix-er!

Watching movies and series can be a good way to unwind and laugh at the end of a rough day, but you absolutely need to keep an eye on the clock.

If you want your mind and body to function optimally the next day, make it your mission to sleep enough and give your body all the rest it needs.

And here comes the difficult part… Stay away from ANY screens for at least half an hour before you go to bed. Digital screens have a very particular kind of light that stimulates our brains and keeps them awake.

So, switch your phone to airplane mode half an hour before you plan to sleep and don’t look at it again. Rather take this time to listen to music, or read a bit or colour in (it works wonders for relaxation!!).

Planning your evening routine instead of letting it just “happen”, will give your body the rest it needs which will make you more productive the next day.

Also take time in the evening to write out your schedule for the next day. Be practical and write out for yourself WHEN you’re going to do which tasks. This way you won’t feel flooded by a wave of overwhelm the next day. You’ll feel more in control of your day, instead of putting out fires all day long.

3. Divide Your Day into Phases

I just rubbed my hand over my face as I read this heading, because I realized that I keep forgetting to apply this tip!

Life is busy. Life is hard. Unless you look at it in part.

By this I mean that it’s not a good idea to look at EVERYTHING you need to do today AT THE SAME TIME. This will lead to severe overwhelm.

Overwhelm overloads your mind and emotions with expectations. A list of 20 expectations will absolutely shut you down, weigh you down and prevent you from functioning productively.

Breaking the day up into separate tasks does not help me either – because the amount of tasks is still overwhelming!

All Home Bakers want to get their baking done faster, because higher productivity means higher profit margins! Not to mention MORE time with family! The mistake we often make is to think that hard work = productivity, which is a recipe for burnout! Learn how to boost your Home Bakery Business's productivity by working SMARTER, not harder. #homebakery #bakingbusiness #homebaking #baking

What I like to do is divide my day up into phases.

Defining the different phases of my day helps me to focus clearly on a handful of tasks that all fall under the same type of category.

By focusing on 1 phase at a time, I don’t clutter my thoughts with too many tasks or wonder “WHEN am I going to get that thing done?!”.

I know when I’m going to get that done. It will get done in my late afternoon phase, so I don’t need to spend any energy worrying about it NOW.

I encourage you to test which tasks fit better into which phases of your day.

Some tasks might be easier for you to complete in the morning than for others.

I’ve heard that it’s bad for creatives to answer emails first thing in the morning, but I love it! The world is still quiet and I get to chat with awesome peeps like you first thing – I love starting my day this way.

But laundry is a late morning phase thing for me. The thought of doing laundry first thing in the morning makes me want to cry.

So there are no rules here. Divide your day into phases and distribute your tasks as YOU like them.

Don’t force yourself to do laundry first thing in the morning just because people label such a routine as “super productive”!

Rather be realistic and honest with yourself about which tasks suit YOU better at certain times of the day.

I also like to divide my baking up into 5 phases every day:

Early Morning – Phase 1 – ADMIN for 1 hour: This is the only time of the day I check emails. One of the worst, most time-consuming mistakes you can make is to answer emails on your phone all day long. It breaks your concentration and slows you down!  I specifically removed email from my phone so I’m not tempted to respond. Set a time to answer emails on your computer and then walk away!

Morning – Phase 2 – PREP: I sift all my dry ingredients, chop everything that needs to be chopped, cut out the correct parchment sizes, etc.

Late Morning – Phase 3 – BAKING SHIFT 1: This is just to get my baking GOING. I’ll bake 1 thing just to make me feel like I’m making progress. It’s usually a layer cake because I know it needs lots of time to cool before I can start decorating it.

LUNCH – It’s super important to take a short break from your work and SIT DOWN to eat. No order is more important that your health & sanity.

Afternoon – Phase 4 – BAKING SHIFT 2: Rest of the baking work.

TEA BREAK.

Late afternoon – Phase 5 – DECORATING & CLEAN UP.

Early evening – Phase 6 – POSTING ON INSTAGRAM STORIES. Back in the day I used to share behind the scenes videos and photos of my baking throughout the day on my Instagram Stories, but that takes up soooo much more time! It works much better to take photos & videos throughout the day and then post all of it at the same time. It’s a lot better for your engagement too because when your followers start engaging with your stories they want to see what happens next! Making them wait 4 hours to see the next shot isn’t fun for them.

Dividing up my day into these phases has helped SO much to make my baking days feel less overwhelming. This structure has helped me to accomplish more in less time.

4. Do Tasks in Bulk

It’s a whole lot more efficient to simply to do things in bulk wherever it’s possible because jumping between tasks wastes heaps of time.

Doing things in bulk will streamline your productivity and business like crazy.

This also means setting aside times in the day for certain tasks and sticking to that schedule!

For example: Do not answer emails all throughout the day. You can follow my routine I listed a bit earlier. Or you can decide on 2 half hour slots per day for answering emails – one in the late morning and one in the late afternoon.

Keep your phone AWAY from your kitchen when you are baking!! Instagram is the graveyard of time!! Schedule “Insta-times” for yourself in the day, but it cannot be during baking time.

If you had a corporate job, ANY boss would be infuriated if you went on Instagram every 10 minutes, because that means you are stealing his time and being unproductive.

Well my friend, YOU are your own boss now which means that you are actually stealing your own time. Yikes!

Batching is also essential in your baking tasks. PREP IS EVERYTHING. More on this in Tip 6!

5. INVEST in TIME savers

Time is something you can NEVER get back, but Money is something you can make back.

I recently learned this from Sterling Griffin! And upon hearing this and really letting it sink in, I quickly became SHOCKED by how little value I put on my time.

I am super frugal, so I often place myself in a position where I’d rather spend my time than spend money.

This mindset is the ANTIDOTE to productivity.

YOUR TIME IS THE MOST VALUABLE COMMODITY YOU HAVE. Don’t treat it like it’s limitless – because it is absolutely not. It’s priceless.

Invest in time saving tools wherever you are able to. This will get you to your goals FASTER.

Let me use a super obvious example to illustrate my point.

There was a time when a cheese grater was a new invention… Up until then, everyone was just slicing vegetables and other foods with simple knives.

I’m SURE there were women those days that said: “I cannot afford a grater! Money is scarce! I’d rather just keep slicing my carrots by hand for my carrot cakes.”

But others saw the opportunity this grater device was offering. It would save them TIME. If they didn’t need to spend an hour on slicing carrots for 1 cake, they could now double their carrot cake production for the day and MAKE DOUBLE THE PROFIT!

Initially you may need to spend some money to buy a time saving tool, but consider your RETURN ON INVESTMENT.

Will this tool/service/course save you time?

Will this tool/service/course increase your baking capacity and grow your business?

If the answer is YES, then borrow money to invest in that tool. The tool will pay itself off and then proceed to save you time, generate more profit for you and grow your baking business.

For example, it takes up so much time to create templates for invoices, quotes, sales tracking, monthly income statements, etc. But it’s going to save you so much time and frustration to just use mine 🙂 You can get all my templates in the Confident Pricing & Profit Kit.

Another great example: I used to use cup measurements in my baking. But when I started baking for Wholesale Clients I quickly realized that cup measurements just aren’t practical in a Home Bakery! You need to wash them over and over throughout the day and it WASTES SO MUCH TIME. Getting a digital kitchen scale was the BEST investment (around $25) to save me time and frustration. You just weigh everything directly into your mixing bowl in like 3 minutes total. It’s fantastic! Plus, no extra cups to clean and your baking turns out consistent and perfect every time.

6. Do as Many Tasks as Possible in Advance

The only things you need to do as late as possible is baking the goods, decorating them and packaging them. But everything else you can do well in advance!

Baking Days and Order Collection/Delivery Days are already stressful and crazy. The last thing you want to worry about is cutting out labels or finishing the decorations on your packaging.

Here’s a list of tasks you can do way in advance:

🍪 Sift all your dry ingredients (the day before baking day) into little labelled zip seal baggies. This way you won’t have to jump between dry and wet ingredients for every single item you mix and your counter space will be less cluttered.

🍪 Create all your decorations in advance. I often decorate my bakes with Dark Chocolate Curls or messages I write with Chocolate. But since chocolate has a super long shelf-life, you can do tasks like this a week or more in advance. Constantly be on the lookout for decorating tasks you can do in advance.

🍪 Finish up your packaging way in advance. There’s zero reason for doing this on order collection day! Cut all ribbons, string & labels while you watch a movie on the weekends. If you write thank you notes, cut the paper well in advance. And whatever you can stick, write or tie in advance, do it. This way you can just pop the baked goods in their boxes in a flash!

7. Bonus Tip! REST is an Investment in Productivity

This seems boring and irrelevant, but RESTING STRATEGICALLY MAKES YOU MORE PRODUCTIVE!!!

I apologize for all the caps and exclamations, but I just had to include them because most bakers struggle to rest.

You NEED to be disciplined about resting.

I used to see resting as wasting time and kept thinking of how much I could be doing in that time.

But here’s another perspective:

You can’t be productive when you burn out, can you?

You can’t be productive if you are constantly exhausted, can you?

Lately I’ve been colouring in for 30 minutes a day with classical music and a cup of tea. You actually get Colouring in Books for Adults and IT WORKS WONDERS! No wonder life was so FUN and exciting when we were kids!

And do not watch series or movies because that won’t let the emotional part of your brain rest.

But whatever works for you, find a way to REST – even for just 15 minutes a day. The world can wait for 15 minutes. We’re not THAT important 😜

Resting at the same time every day also gives you something to look forward to! It’s a time slot that’s YOURS. Having this time to recuperate, rest your body and mind will make you more productive throughout the rest of the day.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my 7 tips to boost your productivity!
